"A great time was had by all." That is the general consensus from young and old who attended the Family Fun Night. Small children enjoyed inflatables, snow cones, and hotdogs, while older kids rode the bungee-bull, ate cookies, and hamburgers and enjoyed a scavenger-hunt. Adults enjoyed ice cream, conversation and getting to know some unique things our church membership do for vocation and avocation.
Over 300 attended this second edition of our Mid-Summer event. The first was held in 2006 and was such a wonderful church family experience that we decided we would do it every year. In 2007, however, we found ourselves recovering from a destructive tornado and lacked the facilities needed. Then we celebrated Calvary's 100th anniversary during the entire month of July in 2008 which kept everyone busy with other priorities. This year there were no obstacles. We expect next year the event will be the best yet. 2010 we will do it again.
One part of the family fun night that allows the church family to learn new things about each other is called The Showcase of Specialties.
Members who have their own business, provide some specialty service, or provide a special craft, requested a table to display their work, craft, or service. Great conversations were had around each table with some contracts made, some items sold, and some just taking a business card in case it might be needed later.
There were so many people in attendance that ice cream ran out about 30 minutes early, and after all of the hamburgers and hotdogs were eaten, we had Chick-Fil-A (Tammy Maddox) deliver a hundred chicken sandwiches to feed the hungry crowd/mob. There were plenty of snowcones, popcorn, cookies, cakes, and smiles all of which were received for one low price - FREE. The homemade peach ice cream, Tim Johnsons special burgers and Moma Fran's cakes were big hits. Adult Sunday School classes and the Youth department provided the labor for the food and fun. It was a team effort that we will try to top in about 365 days.
