Growing through Prayer
We believe in the power of prayer to
change lives and move mountains. James 5:16 says,
"The effective prayer of a
righteous man can accomplish much." Prayer is to
the spiritual life what breathing is to the physical life.
Everything we do and say should be done within the
atmosphere of prayer.
Prayer lists
A list of persons for whom we are praying is
circulated in each Adult Sunday School class each Sunday morning
and is placed on each table during the evening meal on
Wednesdays. Church members are encouraged to pray for names
listed and to contact the church office to place names on the
list. Our Minister of Pastoral Care maintains the list and keeps
the church informed of persons in the hospital or sick at home.
Prayer groups
Various groups meet for prayer during the
week. Persons wishing to join a group for prayer may check with
the church office for day and times.
Private Prayer
Prayer is best when it is personal and private.
Matthew 6:5 "And
when you pray, you are not to be as the hypocrites; for they
love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street
corners, in order to be seen by men. Truly I say to you,
they have their reward in full. 6 But you, when you pray, go
into your inner room, and when you have shut your door, pray
to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in
secret will repay you."
We encourage members to develop a daily prayer, Bible study
and devotion time.
- Select a specific time: one in which you can be
consistent.
- Choose a special place: a place where you can be alone
with God.
- Gather resources before you begin: Bible, notebook for
prayer journal, hymnal.
- Begin with the right attitudes: reverence, expectancy,
willingness to obey.
- Follow a simple plan: Relax, read, reflect, record,
request.
